Outstanding COPE approved CE in an Outstanding Environment:  Italy!
2010 Conferences:  Cinque Terre & Rome!

New for CE in Italy 2010:  Two Outstanding Conference Locations:
The Cinque Terre and Rome

Greetings Colleagues:

I am happy to announce the locations for the CE in Italy 2010 Conferences.   This year, we will have two separate conferences in two separate locations in Italy.  The reason for this is quite simple:  There is so much to see and do in Italy, it is hard to pick just one location.  And I have gotten many requests for conference locations, so to try to make this appealing for everyone, we will have one meeting in the Cinque Terre, and a separate meeting in Rome.  I travel throughout Italy regularly and have been to both locations multiple times.

First, the specifics related to each conference.  Both the Rome and the Cinque Terre (CT for short) will offer 12 hours of outstanding COPE approved CE.  The dates of the Cinque Terre conference are May 23, 24, and 25, 2010.  The dates for the Rome conference are May 27, 28, and 29, 2010.  You may register for either conference, depending on your preference of locations, or you can register for both meetings at a reduced rate if you so desire.  Four hours of continuing education is offered  bright and early each morning, leaving you the entire day to sightsee and enjoy Italy.  See comments below from your colleagues about their experience at the 2009 conference in Florence, Italy, to get a flavor of what you will experience.

In reference to each conference, I have spent a significant amount of time, along with Liz Coughlin, our preferred travel agent, in lining up the hotels that would be best suited for the meetings.

The Cinque Terre conference will be held in the city of Portovenere, which is adjacent to the Cinque Terre and is easily accessible by car or train.  I have stayed here before and it is magnificent.  This conference will be strictly limited to 20 doctors.  The headquarters hotel for this conference is The Hotel della Baia (
http://www.baiahotel.com/).

The Rome Conference will be held close to Vatican City, in one of the most convenient sections of Rome.  This conference will be strictly limited to 30 doctors.  There will be two preferred hotels for the Rome conference, separated by only 2 blocks, to accommodate the 30 registrants.

The headquarters hotel for the Rome Conference is the Hotel Dei Consoli (http://www.hoteldeiconsoli.com/).  We have reserved 20 rooms at this hotel.  Morning continuing education will be held at this hotel in the conference room.  The second Rome hotel is a sister hotel called the Hotel Amalia (http://www.hotelamalia.com/).  There are 10 rooms reserved in this hotel.  These rooms will go fast, so I cannot stress to you the importance of reserving your room ASAP as these hotels will certainly fill up.  The end of May in Italy is the beginning of the height of the tourist season, so room demand will be high, and hotels will fill up quickly.

We have been fortunate enough to negotiate group rates for the hotels involved in our 2010 meetings.  They are available on a first come, first served basis.  Rates at Hotel della Baia in Portovenere are $230 USD/ night.  Rates at Hotel Dei Consoli are 260 EUROS/night and at Hotel Amalia are 207 EUROS/night.  Please note these rates for the Rome hotels are in EUROS, and the exchange rate will vary depending on prevailing rates at the time of the reservation.  Please contact Liz Coughlin at Four Seasons Travel to reserve your room (follow the links to the Contact Us page).  Again, in order to take advantage of the group rates, don’t delay in reserving your room.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre literally translates to the ‘five lands’.  The Cinque Terre is located along the Ligurian Coast in an area of Italy more commonly known as the Italian Riviera.  The CT consits of 5 small towns, accessible only by boat or train.  In neighboring Portovenere, where the headquarters hotel is located, there is easy access to ferries that will take you to the CT.  Once you get to any of the towns, you can then jump on the train to get to the next town, of if you like to hike, there is an absolutely beautiful hiking trail linking each of the cities.  Hiking times between the towns range from 20 minutes to 2.5 hours, but the scenery is spectacular.

Here are some links to the Cinque Terre that will give you more details:

Rome

Rome…..the Eternal City.  If you have never been to Italy, Rome is certainly on the ‘must see’ list.  Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, The Sistine Chapel, Piazza Navona, The Colosseum, The Roman Forum, The Spanish Steps……the list goes on and on and on.  I personally have been to Rome 6 times, and I still find things and places that I haven’t seen before, and I am looking forward to going back again in May.  There is so much to do and see in Rome, your visit there will leave you seeing the highlights, but also leaving you with a desire to return in the future.

The Blog Pages

I will be posting thoughts and suggestions regularly on the blog pages of the website.  Just follow the link in the upper left hand corner of the home page to access the blog.  Having traveled extensively through Italy over the years, I will have some suggestions, recommendations, and other comments, so be sure to check those pages out periodically.

In the interim, my suggestion is to REGISTER EARLY!  The 20 spaces available for The Cinque Terre will go fast…the 30 spaces available for Rome will go even faster.

A Presto!

Sincerely,

James L. Fanelli, OD, FAAO

Take a look at what your colleagues are saying about the meeting:

“I have been in practice for nearly 25 years meaning that I have had over 1000 hours of CE. Never have I attended a conference that was as intimate and interactive as CE in Italy. The small group of doctors got to know each other on a personal level which simply does not happen at a larger gathering. The trio of Jim, Carlo and Joe are both informative and entertaining. I literally learned something that helped me make a diagnosis this week. Let’s not forget that we are also in Italy, one of the most beautiful and romantic places on earth. The setting is worth going to without the conference but let’s face it, we all need the hours so why not get them in Italy.”

Dr. Karl Wolfe, St Mary’s,  PA

“Best educational meeting I have been to in years!  The location was fabulous, all three lecturers were great, with very good material.”

          Dr. David Lowell, Westbrook, Maine

“Great academic info and great cultural experience.  Three great speakers in an informative yet light and interactive setting.  I would have liked to have heard the ‘Three Tenors’ (Fanelli, Pelino, and Pizzimenti) sing.”  (Editor’s note:  the last comment was probably written under the influence of too much chianti!)

Dr. Brant Gehler, Colorado Springs, Colorado

“Excellent!  Great location:  Italy! Italy! Italy!  The CE was very appropriate for the role of the optometrist as we move our way into the medical healthcare future.”

          Dr. Tish Albin, Houston TX

“It could not have been a more perfect meeting!  The location was great for walking and sightseeing.  The group grand rounds lecture was one of the best I have ever encountered.  Please keep me informed for the 2010 meeting.”

          Dr. Bernard Martin, Buffalo NY

“I thought it was a great group of attendees and I enjoyed meeting everyone.  High quality CE in a beautiful location.  I can’t think of a thing to make next years’ meeting better.”

Dr. Craig Murtha, Rock Hill, SC

“XLNT!  I liked the early morning meeting times and the small size of the group.  Perfect location!”

          Dr. Pat Bartels, Omaha, Nebraska

“I think that Dr. Carlo Pelino did a fantastic job of presenting  his lectures.  Very knowledgeable individual.  I would like to see more of him on the agenda in the future.”

          Dr. Carlo Pelino, Philadelphia, PA
